Macaroni 2.1.1 has just been released. This version fixes a number of minor bugs in 2.1, most notably:
- Fixes a particularly embarrassing bug where it would occasionally be impossible to register Macaroni.
- Fixes the "clear history" button, which was unfortunately broken in 2.1.
System Requirements
To use Macaroni 2.1.1 you must have Mac OS X 10.4 or 10.5, on an Intel or PowerPC Mac. Mac OS X 10.2 and 10.3 will not run Macaroni 2.1.1, although Macaroni 2.0.8 is still available from the Macaroni page if you need it for an older Mac
.
This is a free upgrade for all registered users of Macaroni. Macaroni 2.1.1 can be downloaded from the Macaroni home page.
To Upgrade
There always seems to be a little confusion regarding how to upgrade Macaroni. Here's how you do it:
- Install the new version.
- There is no step 2.
People often assume that they need to go through a complex upgrade routing involving (at a minimum) removing the old version and (sometimes) mysterious rituals they expect are necessary to prepare their Mac. I try to make it as painless as possible but some people seem to expect the worst. If for some reason it's not that simple for you, please let me know so that I can make sure to fix the problem in the next version.
Developer Note
If you're interested in Mac OS X software development, you may be interested to know that this is the first version of Macaroni built on Mac OS X 10.5 "Leopard", and using the new Xcode 3 development environment. Macaroni 2.1 was a Leopard-compatible upgrade, but was built on Mac OS X 10.4 using Xcode 2.4. I have not yet migrated from nibs to xibs for the GUI, but I'm investigating the possibility for future releases.

We all know these routine maintenance tasks have to be done. But they're a pain to remember, and we laypeople don't have the knowledge, confidence and experience to do so.
I tried a few other programs. IceClean, some with the word Maintenance in their names. None worked well. None inspired confidence. I had to guess at what was going on, lacking clear guidance from the software developer.
I am SOOOOOO glad I found Macaroni. What an easy to use, clear interface. What a wonderful set of clear explanations, complete with a PDF user guide. That is one of the best user guides I've ever read. I now know all I need to know: my computer will be well-maintained on a schedule and in a manner that I as a layperson am comfortable with...all without me ever needing to be involved beyond today. How wonderful!!!!
I'm still in my trial phase, but, barring a disaster, I'll be purchasing and promoting Macaroni.
My only one small little niggling suggestion is that in the System Preferences panel, when I highlight a job by clicking on it once, a button appear, so that I don't need to double-click on the job to get the next dialog box. That was the only semi-non-intuitive moment in the entire process. (And something somewhere did prompt me to double-click, so it worked fine, but for a second or two, I was a bit stumped.)
By the way, just finished running "Remove localized files" for the first time. Ran seamlessly in the background, while I was working. I did not even notice that it was doing its thing. I'm a bit of a language buff, so I kept several arcane languages and dialects others won't even have heard of. Despite this, and despite the fact that I've had this Mac less than six months ... drum roll, please ...
Localization cleaning complete.
Removed 65777 files and 21944 directories to save 554.46 MB.
Again, many thanks...
Jerry
