I've just uploaded beta 1 of MondoMouse 1.4.4. This update is intended for people using Mac OS X 10.6 "Snow Leopard". It fixes a couple of annoying issues:
- System Preferences will no longer have to restart when opening the MondoMouse preference pane.
- MondoMouse won't suddenly stop running the way it does sometimes
Most of what I changed in this update is bringing back some stuff I wrote back in 2006 before MondoMouse 1.0 came out, but that I had to abandon due to bugs in Mac OS X 10.4 (which was current at the time). These bugs have since been fixed, so MondoMouse goes back to the way I had hoped it would work and becomes more reliable to boot.
This update requires 10.5 or higher. It's only needed if you're running 10.6. I may be able to add 10.4 support by the time this gets out of beta, but that'll depend on taking a good hard look at my usage stats to see if anyone's still using MondoMouse on 10.4.
Please note that this is a beta release-- I still have some things on my to-do list for 1.4.4, but I wanted to get something out for 10.6 users as quickly as possible. I use MondoMouse constantly myself, so I know how annoying it's been of late.
You can download the beta here.

Woo-hoo! Thanks, Tom. Running this now. So far, so good for me.

Awesome -- thank you!

This version has one weird behavior: it requires TextEdit to be open. That is, when MM is enabled TextEdit fires up. If I quit TE, a new instance opens almost immediately. Very odd.
Mon, 12/07/2009 - 10:06
The same thing happens to me - using MacBook Pro. Just downloaded beta -and I too get the TE constantly reopening.
Mon, 02/08/2010 - 07:16
Seeing textedit appear when I enable/disable MM 1.4.4b1 :-(
Sun, 10/04/2009 - 18:55
I'm using this now — thanks so much for the update! — but I wanted to report some hinkiness in the install process: I ran the installer, System Preferences opened and asked me if I wanted to replace the existing Preferences Pane; I clicked Replace and it opened Mondo Mouse, but the version was still 1.4.3. I uninstalled it and relaunched the 1.4.4b installer, but Sys Prefs beachballed for ~ 1 min and then quit. I ran the installer again and it finally worked normally.
PS. Your captcha is broken.
Tue, 10/06/2009 - 07:13
Yes, there really is a lot of changes, I think, that now becomes much easier to work with this program.
Tue, 10/06/2009 - 19:37
Thanks so much for this update, MondoMouse 1.4.2 was quitting all the time for me. I'll download and install this one.
It also had a hang just now where it would use all the CPU. I have a sample report if that is useful for you:

I'm sorry, but I'm giving up on Mondo Mouse. I purchased a license a few weeks before Snow Leopard, learned to love it, but now it's a complete and total bust. It rarely worked in Snow Leopard, but I waited patiently for an update.
This new release is worse than broken. Every time I try to move a window textedit opens, I quit textedit it reopens immediately. I've tried removing and reinstalling but I've yet to get a window to move, resize, nothing. If you want a keyboard shortcut for textedit Mondo Mouse is for you, otherwise gbye.
Oh, and you captcha doesn't work. You can enter the correct answer several times and it still fails. Yeah, I do know what 4*8 is, your captcha doesn't.
Thu, 10/15/2009 - 10:15
I have the same textedit problem the other user describes above- whenever MondoMouse is enabled, TextEdit opens. If I disable via the checkbox in the prefpane, TextEdit closes. Weirdness.
Thu, 10/15/2009 - 11:54
Regarding the thing with TextEdit opening; I tried it both installed for all users and for one user; same thing. And when it's doing the textedit thing, I can't actually use mondomouse functions- it's acting like there's a keyboard shortcut conflict, but I couldn't figure out how to get around it.
I uninstalled it and went back to the previous version (with the 32 bit prefpane), and it works fine, just as before.
I'll wait for the next iteration, and hope that it gets better. The occasional random deactivation of MondoMouse is annoying, but at least it works.
Thu, 10/15/2009 - 16:47
This beta 1.4.4b1 crashes every day. Even when it's works again, it's very slow.
I'm running OS X 10.6.1 on a Core 2 Duo iMac (4 gigs RAM).
I think I'll reinstall 1.4.3 until the bugs are worked out of this beta.
Thanks.
Sun, 10/18/2009 - 02:07
The Beta works fine for me (for 2 days now). I'm on 10.6.1. No weird TextEdit problem and for me it is much more stable then the 1.4.3.
Mon, 10/19/2009 - 22:10
Very crashy on 10.6 to me, especially with Terminal.app. I'm tired of having to go restart MM in the control panel three times a day :(
Tue, 10/27/2009 - 11:24
So I tried 1.4.4b1 on Snow Leopard for a while but then had to switch off MondoMouse completely, it just crashes too often.
I really hope a new, Snow Leopard-compatible version comes out soon because I miss this functionality.
Fri, 10/30/2009 - 09:32
so this still isn't 100%. every so often, MondoMouseTool freaks out and pins the cpu and for some reason, chrome windows give mondmouse a hard time (mostly chrome incognito windows). any more updates to this otherwise awesome software?
Mon, 11/09/2009 - 13:47
I can reliably get MondoMouse 1.4.3 to crash by trying to use it to move a Safari window playing a Youtube video. Maybe this helps you fix?
I'm on 10.6.1 and also have the TextEdit problem with 1.4.4b1, so I'm living with 1.4.3 and just opening up the preference pane every time it crashes.
Would it be possible to provide a shell script to relaunch MondoMouse which I could use e.g. QuickSilver to map to a keyboard shortcut, so that it's easier to relaunch when it crashes?
Thanks,
Josh

I'm also having the TextEdit problem, but Mondomouse continues to function just fine, whether TextEdit is open or not. When I quit TextEdit, it always starts back up within 10-15 seconds, but Mondomouse does work in the meantime. Hopefully we can get this fixed...
Thu, 11/12/2009 - 17:18
The TextEdit problem continued even after downgrading or uninstalling. Using the directions here to unload and remove the plist file...
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2199814&tstart=1
...I was able to stop TextEdit from starting. After doing so, I reinstalled Mondomouse, and so far, so good.

Hi 1.4.4b1 just hangs in the "Loading MondoMouse..." phase when I attempt to visit the pref. pane.
I even managed to get a crash <<

Can you PLEASE fix your Contact Us page? It never takes the math answer correctly. Why don't you just drop the question and let us post the form normally? I've been trying to contact you for months!

Hey Tom,
Thank you for the great work on MondoMouse! Just wondering if there was any news about a 64-bit release coming up? Is there some way to subscribe to a mailing list so I'll be notified when there's a new release? Wouldn't want to miss it!
Thanks,
Josh

I tried the newest beta as well as 1.4.3 on Snow Leopard with all the latest software updates but MondoMouse just keeps crashing after using it a few times.
If you manage to get it working stable in Snow Leopard I would totally buy a license!
Fri, 12/18/2009 - 09:37
I really loved MondoMouse but judging from the responses here the product/project seems to be dead, and broken on Snow Leopard.
I just found a perfect replacement I'm very happy with, check out Zooom2:

I too am a big fan of MondoMouse, well until i finally upgraded to SL this weekend. Now I find myself here.
I was going to suggest to Atomic that they add some snap features, then I would be more than happy to pony up another $15. Maybe that is what they are working on but the lack of response here makes me think otherwise.
Thanks for the link to Zoom2. Im giving Atomic the benefit of the doubt, but if after the 30 day trial they don't have a new version, I'm regrettably jumping ship.
Fri, 01/22/2010 - 13:23
30 day Zooom 2 trial is up and still no response from Atomicbird. It's a shame, I was perfectly happy with MM and as stated above willing to pay for an upgrade.
Coderage on the other hand has been responsive to my feedback and Zooom 2 has proven to be an excellent replacement.
good luck

I also had the annoying problem with TextEdit opening with MM 1.4.4b1. Having looked at the mondomouse.plist file referenced in the response number 19, I had a play to see if I could make things look a bit more sensible. I have only just tried this and it appears to work but it's messing with plists and you do that at your own risk...
cd ~/Library/LaunchAgents/
cp mondomouse.plist mondomouse.plist.orig
edit mondomouse.plist with your favourite editor.
replace
/Applications/TextEdit.app/Contents/MacOS/TextEdit
with
/Library/PreferencePanes/MondoMouse.prefPane/Contents/MacOS/MondoMouseTool.app\
/Contents/MacOS/MondoMouseTool
(close up the line break and remove the \)
This appears to stop TextEdit from constantly starting up. MM is now pretty snappy and (if I understand launchctl correctly) MondoMouseTool should restart if it crashes.

I just installed http://coderage-software.com/zooom/ too and it works great. If a Snow Leopard compatible version of MondoMouse (which I've already paid for) is not out by the time the 30-day demo of Zooom is up, I'm switching too.
I wouldn't mind so much that it's taking a while to get a Snow Leopard compatible release of MondoMouse if there were at least some response to our comments, but it looks like there has been zero activity since this blog post several months ago.
Let's give feedback about the project's stagnation on http://osx.iusethis.com/app/mondomouse. As it stands, people who want this functionality on Snow Leopard should be using Zooom.

In my experience, Zooom doesn't always work well. For example, OpenOffice.org crashes with Zooom. I have reported the problem to the development team several times but no improvement till now. MondoMouse is much more stable than Zooom. That is why I am using MondoMouse in spite of its slow development. Hope development of MondoMouse goes well making a great progress without delay. Thanks for the good util. - Hajime

Add me to the growing list of those waiting for a fix for these issues. MM is great, but is consistently not working: I have to press modifier keys repeatedly before they MM kicks in. When it works MM is great; when it doesn't, it's frustrating.

Every couple of dasy the MondoMouseTool application starts consuming lots of CPU cycles—up to around 100%. Under normal circumstance it uses less than .5. Have to quit and relaunch. Then things go back to normal.

so mondo mouse has completely stopped working for me on 10.6.2 now; it feels like it happened after the latest round of updates.
do you have any plans on getting a legit working version of mondomouse for 10.6 or should I just say it was good while it lasted?
also, your captcha is _still_ broken. is there somewhere to file a bug for that?
Wed, 02/10/2010 - 16:10
I too have the reappearing textedit problem.
This beta release is 6 months out now, any progress on the final?
Sun, 02/14/2010 - 01:37
I have the same problem as Bob Embry. Guess I'll try Zooom...
Tue, 02/16/2010 - 20:37
I am wondering if the new version will finally have modifier+click+drag for resizing/moving. For example, set command+left click+drag to move and command+right click+drag to resize. This is standard X11 behaviour, but is not supported in MM yet. It would be especially useful since you don't have to have as many modifier keys for the shortcuts (try using just command for the move modifier - lots of unintentionally moved windows).
Mon, 03/01/2010 - 08:52
Im on a laptop or wireless BT keyboard so I use the Fn as my modifier. Fn to move Fn+shift to resize. If I'm ever on a standard keyboard I use Ctrl / Ctrl+shift. I'm still on zooom2 (just released 64 bit) and not having problems described above.
